About The Grateful Dead
The legacy of the Grateful Dead isn’t necessarily one of musicianship and artistry, but of cultural relevancy.
Original members Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann started as the Warlocks in 1964, the house band of choice for Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters’ famed psychotropic fueled parties, which became the backdrop for Tom Wolfe’s acclaimed novel The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.
From there, the Dead’s popularity spread like wildfire through San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district, as hippies and other members of the counterculture movement began to embrace their Classic Rock sound as gospel.
In 1970 they released their most revered album by far in American Beauty, whose songs “Box of Rain”, “Sugar Magnolia”, and “Truckin’” each went on to become staples in their legendary live performances.
Garcia died from a heart attack on August 9, 1995, but the Dead continue to tour in several different incarnations.
