About The Who
Separately, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon could have established respectable bands of their very own, but together they were an unstoppable force that shook the very foundations of Rock and Roll.
The four Englishmen struck gold in 1965 with the Kinks inspired hit “I Can’t Explain”, but it wasn’t until two years later that the Who established themselves as the voice of a generation with their aptly titled song “My Generation”, whose nihilistic rallying cry spoke directly to a disenchanted counterculture movement.
In 1969 Townshend and company shifted gears and focused their attention on the possibilities of music as storytelling, giving birth to a Rock opera masterpiece about a blind pinball prodigy.
The Who followed up the multiplatinum success of Tommy with critical darling Who’s Next and the epic double album Quadrophenia.
On September 7, 1978 Moon died of an apparent drug overdose, which would also later claim the life of Entwistle in 2002, leaving the Who a mere shell of their former selves.
