About The Rolling Stones
If it weren’t for the storied legacy of their fellow British rivals the Beatles, there would be little doubt about the Rolling Stones placement amongst the Rock gods, but for the time being they’ll just have to settle for second place in the eternal struggle for Rock and Roll supremacy.
As homage to their blues idol Muddy Waters, the Rolling Stones (who formed in 1960) named their band after a song he had written.
Made up of the indestructible Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Woods, and their charismatic frontman Mick Jagger, the Stones completely altered the landscape of modern music and pumped brutality (“Street Fighting Man”), rebellion (“Gimme Shelter’), and nihilism (“Paint It, Black”) into the lifeblood of Rock.
Jagger and company are also responsible for the greatest run of albums ever in Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and the immortal Exile on Main St., all of which were recorded in the span of four years.
The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
Influenced: The Stooges, Aerosmith, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen
