About The Pixies
Historians often credit Nirvana with revitalizing 90’s Alternative Rock, but those in the know have come to realize that the decade owes a great deal more to the Pixies, for without their tireless contributions we’d all truly be lost.
Paired as roommates at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Black Francis and Joey Santiago became fast friends, regularly participating in impromptu jam sessions and exposing one another to new music.
Needing additional members for their band, Francis posted an advertisement in the local classified ads seeking any and all female bass players with a shared fondness for Peter, Paul and Mary and Husker Du; Kim Deal was the only person who responded.
The band recorded a series of demos using money lent to them by Francis’ father, copies of which were circulated to record labels and producers.
Having caught the attention of record executive Ivo-Watts Russell, the Pixies signed with his independent label 4AD and in 1987 recorded their debut EP Come On Pilgrim.
The following year Francis and company released their landmark second album Surfer Rosa, whose infectious song about interracial relations (“Gigantic”) and mesmerizing ode to personal neurosis (“Where Is My Mind?”) are regularly cited by many musicians as major influences.
The Pixies outdid themselves yet again in 1989 with the creation of Doolittle, which to this day ranks amongst the greatest albums ever made.
