About Rage Against the Machine

The paths of music and politics have long intertwined, but few bands revel at the chance to stick it to the Man quite like Rage Against the Machine.

Tom Morello met Zack de la Rocha in a Los Angeles nightclub in 1991. Impressed by Rocha’s flair for lyrics, the Harvard educated guitarist recruited the freestyle rapper to his cause, who in turn convinced longtime friend Tim Commerford to join their ranks.

Together with drummer Brad Wilk, Rage Against the Machine released their self-titled debut the following year, and led by the overwhelming popularity of first single “Killing in the Name”, conquered the same terrestrial radio stations that long sought to censor any and all subversive content.

Rage Against the Machine’s defining moment as a band came in 2000 at the Democratic National Convention. Morello and company staged a free concert in protest of the event, but things quickly escalated into violence after audience members engaged in heated exchanges with armed patrolmen, resulting in a shower of rubber bullets and tear gas.
