NIRVANA LOGO BUTTON - ONE INCH
No band defined their decade more than Nirvana, whose stark nihilism epitomized the misanthropic angst felt by a resurgent youth culture that had grown weary of being told how to act, feel, and think.
Kurt Cobain became the living embodiment of the 90’s Grunge movement, which embraced the subversive elements of Heavy Metal and Hardcore Punk, and in the instance of Nirvana, fused them with other traditionally wholesome music genres such as Surf Rock and Pop.
Formed in the rural town of Aberdeen, Washington in 1988, Nirvana and its iconic frontman were heavily influenced by the Pixies, Sonic Youth, and the Melvins.
Nirvana’s first major label effort came in 1990 when they released the Butch Vig produced Nevermind, whose four accompanying singles “Come as You Are”, “Lithium”, “In Bloom”, and of course the anthemic “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, each charted and helped propel the album to number one status.
Sadly, it all came to a tragic end on April 8, 1994 when Cobain’s body was discovered at his Lake Washington home along with a suicide note which read, “I haven’t felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music, along with really writing…for too many years now.”
