The performer extraordinaire lived a fairly inconspicuous life as Madonna Louise Ciccone, up until a spur of the moment move to New York with a mere $35 in hand set in motion a series of career shaping events.
There she became romantically involved with musician Dan Gilroy, who helped form her first band, the Breakfast Club.
Her tenure with the band would not last for long, but a second foray into the group dynamic would lead to a chance encounter with Sire Records founder Seymour Stein.
Madonna eventually signed with the label and in 1983 released her self-titled debut, which peaked at number eight on the Billboard charts as a result of the overwhelming popularity of her infectious singles “Lucky Star”, “Holiday”, and “Borderline”.
