About Slayer

When it comes to raising controversy, no band has been more prolific than Slayer, whose scorched earth musical stylings has incensed everyone from religious zealots to 9/11 widows.

The Thrash Metal ensemble got its start in 1981, when Huntington Park, California natives Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman recruited lead vocalist Tom Araya, a certified respiratory therapist of Chilean decent.

Araya used the money he had earned in the medical field to help finance the band’s first album Show No Mercy, which largely went unnoticed.

Several years later Slayer released their second full-length album Hell Awaits, whose vicious guitar assault and disturbing Satanic imagery inspired many of the Black Metal acts of today.

Slayer was later signed to Def Jam Records (a predominantly Hip-Hop centric label) at the behest of its co-founder Rick Rubin, who went on to produce the critically acclaimed Reign in Blood.

With their newfound notoriety came an unwelcomed public backlash from media outlets, who decried the album’s opening track “Angel of Death” as a tribute to reviled war criminal Josef Mengele, but the band denied all allegations of anti-Semitism.
