About Lou Reed

Try as they might, no musician can or ever will muster quite as much effortless cool as Lou Reed did in his heyday.

Born Lewis Allan Reed in Brooklyn, New York, the now legendary musician was raised in a strict Jewish family, and as a teenager was given electroconvulsive therapy to rid his mind of homosexual thoughts.

In 1963, Reed began writing novelty songs for Pickwick Records, who in turn asked him to form his own band for the sake of live promotions.

That band would eventually become the Velvet Underground, which is widely considered to be among the most influential creative forces of all time.

Reed later quit the band and in 1972 released his second and perhaps best known solo album to date in the David Bowie produced Transformer whose accompanying single “Walk on the Wild Side”, quietly brought the taboo subjects of transsexuality, male prostitution, and drug abuse into the mainstream.
