About Johnny Cash

People often decry country music for its vapid pop flavored tinges, but most forget that long before the days of BBQ stained white t-shirts and odes to man’s best friend, there was one Johnny Cash, who almost single-handedly put the unappreciated genre on the map.

Born on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas, Cash was at constant odds with his own inner demons, a trait he recognized in America’s dark underbelly, which he regularly mined for song material.

Dubbed the “Man In Black” for his monochromatic wardrobe and equally ominous lyrical content, Cash began cultivating his outlaw image with a series of drug arrests in the early 60’s, as well as a string of live albums recorded inside the walls of San Quentin and Folsom Prison.

Cash died from a degenerative brain disease at the age of 71, but his legacy lives on in such timeless classics as “I Walk the Line”, “A Boy Named Sue”, and the ever-burning “Ring of Fire”, which was co-written by June Carter, his beloved wife of 35 years.
