About Elvis Presley

There is little denying the impact Elvis Presley had on Rock and Roll, but many often underestimate his role in shaping the world.

Prior to Elvis, music much like society was deeply segregated, as many of the most innovative artists were forced to take a back seat to sterile acts propagated by an industry driven by the status quo.

However, after entering Sam Phillip’s fabled Sun Records in 1953, Elvis became a catalyst for change, and allowed the vibrant music of an often ignored African American race to find its way into popular culture.

Elvis’ breakthrough came with the release of his self-titled debut in 1957 whose accompanying first single “Blue Suede Shoes” blended elements of Blues and Country music to create the familiar Rockabilly sound that would come to dominate the early part of his career.

Along with bridging the racial gap, Elvis’ provocative gyrations helped usher in an era dominated by overt sexuality, which ultimately angered many of those who still clung to their puritanical ideals.

Also recognized for his contributions to cinema, Elvis starred in over 30 movies during his lifetime, most notably Jailhouse Rock, Blue Hawaii, and Viva Las Vegas.

The King died of health complications on August 16, 1977 at his 13 acre Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee, where he remains buried to this day.
