About Dropkick Murphys
Popularized by the Pogues before them, Celtic Punk took on a life of its own with the introduction of the Dropkick Murphys, a Massachusetts based band whose many anthemic odes to blue collar living have inspired everyone with a pulse to dance an Irish jig.
Comprised of Al Barr, Ken Casey, Matt Kelly, James Lynch, Scruffy Wallace, Tim Brennan, and Jeff DaRosa, the Dropkick Murphys gained notoriety in 2006 after their nearly unrecognizable cover of Woody Guthrie’s “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” (off their fifth studio album The Warrior’s Code) was featured prominently in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar winning crime drama The Departed.
According to interviews, the band’s name derives from a cautionary tale told by local New Englanders to impressionable teenagers, in a misguided attempt to curb their drinking habit.
