About Dead Kennedys
Long before Punk sold its soul to the highest bidder, there were the Dead Kennedys, a band who reveled at every opportunity to wave their defiant middle finger in front of anyone with a pulse.
Originally comprised of East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride, 6025, and the wildly charismatic, Jello Biafra, the Dead Kennedys waged war against the corrupting influence of power (“California Uber Alles”), genocide (“Holiday in Cambodia”), and the Military Industrial Complex (“Kill the Poor”).
In 1980 the San Francisco based ensemble attended a music industry function which showcased bands with supposed New Wave ties, but rather than cater to the whims of event organizers, Biafra interrupted his band’s set by shouting, “Hold it! We’ve gotta prove we’re adults now. We’re not a Punk Rock band, we’re a New Wave band.”
Biafra and company then unveiled dollar sign painted shirts with matching black ties and began playing the previously unreleased “Pull My Strings”, whose pointed lyrics took aim at every record executive in the audience.
Sadly, the Dead Kennedy’s reign lasted only until 1986, after band members grew increasingly tired of their supposed association with a burgeoning Neo-Nazi movement.
