About David Bowie
Part man, interplanetary space traveler, and power hungry aristocrat, David Bowie and his many faces have left an indelible mark on both music and culture.
Born David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947 in London, England, Bowie was exposed to his father’s record collection at an early age, and after listening to Little Richard for the first time, proclaimed that he had heard the voice of God.
His first commercial success came with the release of “Space Oddity” in 1969, which was inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction epic 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Two years later, Bowie released his genre blurring fourth studio album Hunky Dory, whose kaleidoscope influences of Folk, Rock, and even Broadway Musicals, helped make it among the most revered artistic works of the past three decades.
However, it was ultimately his ambitious 1972 concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars that would come to define his career.
The peak of his Glam Rock androgyny, Ziggy Stardust became the living embodiment of an era driven by excess, and with songs such as the otherworldly “Moonage Daydream”, unabashedly misogynistic “Suffragette City”, and immortal “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide”, secured his place in the annals of time.
