About Lynyrd Skynyrd
Bandied about by drunken concert goers and Country Rock enthusiast alike, no song has reached as much acclaim and cultural relevance as “Free Bird”, whose epic 9-minute cacophony of guitar and drum has become the song request of choice for everyone and their mother.
Originating from Jacksonville, Florida, Lynyrd Skynyrd chose its name in mocking tribute to a high school gym teacher (Leonard Skinner) who at the time had an irrational hatred for men with long hair.
In 1973 Ronnie Van Zant and company released their debut self-titled album, which was comprised of several fan favorites that included the likes of “Gimme Three Steps”, “Simple Man”, and the heartbreaking “Tuesday’s Gone”.
But it wasn’t until the following year that Lynyrd Skynyrd struck gold with their wildly popular “Sweet Home Alabama”, a musical response to Neil Young’s negative portrayal of the South in his songs “Southern Man” and “Alabama”.
On October 20, 1977 Lynyrd Skynyrd chartered a plane which crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi, ending the lives of Van Zant and fellow band member Steve Gaines.
